Establishing an uncontaminated environment with pure air through the constant removal of pollutants that may occur naturally or be created by humans, processes, equipment and machinery is the goal of clean room manufacturing. Therefore, there are certain standards and requirements that are necessary in order to ensure that the room is properly controlled.

Clean rooms are classified based on the level of air cleanliness that is achieved. The Federal Standard 209 splits up the rooms into six classes, from class 1 to class 100,000. In example, a class 100,000 clean room is designed to not surpass the count of 100,000 particles of 0.5 microns or higher in a cubit foot of air. Furthermore, clean room manufacturing facilities are also divided up into nine ISO standards. The 100,000 Federal Standard 209 is equivalent to ISO 8 classification.
